My name is Andy Gilliland (three L’s) and I am a visual and motion designer. I design graphical user interfaces for mobile devices, tablets, televisions, websites, and applications
Background
Growing up in a family of designers I have been surrounded by architectural drawings and graphic design since day one. Summer jobs during highschool for me were helping at my parents’ design firm Gilliland Design running blueprints and organizing files.
I went on to study digital design at the University of Cincinnati where I focused on interface design, motion design and interactive prototyping. During my 5 years of studying I also completed 6 professional internships at design firms around the country.
When I graduated I moved immediately to San Francisco and took a job with Frog Design. I have been working and living in San Francisco since then. Currently I am an Associate Design Director at Punchcut.
Experience
I have been drawing and painting since I was about 3, so that gives me about 25 years experience as a visual designer. I have 9 years of experience designing and building interactive websites and 5 years designing UI for consumer devices including mobile phones, televisions, tablets, set top boxes, and embeded systems.
In my professional career over the last 9 years I have designed for 5 of the 6 largest mobile operating systems, worked on 9 device UI’s that have gone to market, designed 24 live websites, and done strategic and tactical design work for 6 fortune 100 companies.
Designing User Interface for mobile devices isn’t a static experience anymore. A strong understanding of motion design, transitional animation and the ability to prototype ideas around interaction and motion can not be an afterthought in the UI design process.
